The KU Amateur Astronomy and Field Crumpets Club demonstrates the concept of the black hole as a "Smiley in the Middle of the Field" analogy. All particles are attracted to the black ('yellow') hole, some even ceasing their former directions of movement, but the speed with which each particle approaches the black ('yellow') hole is directly proportional to its proximity to the hole in question.

The townsfolk saw the strange yellow thing in the middle of their field... so they all got their bats and went to deal with the problem in the only way they knew how.
