The mail will be hosted through Google, so that means you could also chat and use Google calendar with the same address. Some things (like Gmail for mobile, for instance) don't work with Google hosted domains, but I expect that they will soon.

It's my opinion that these email addresses will be around for a long time, so if you do have an email address which is less than permanent (school email addresses for instance) then if you got this you will probably be able to keep it and not have to change it in the near future.
